The shelves are empty as the shelves of the suburban office supply store are full.
It’s a stark contrast to the area around the Georgia Capitol where hundreds of stores are still open for business, including stores for all the major brands of office supplies.
“There’s a real need to expand,” said Sarah Soto, a senior editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Soto has covered Capitol Hill for almost two decades.
In that time, she’s seen Capitol Hill grow, with Capitol Hill House of Representatives and Senate districts expanding to include more than 100,000 residents.
The number of Capitol Hill residents living in metropolitan Atlanta has increased from about 200,000 in 2010 to more than 1.5 million in 2021, according to Census Bureau data.
And that growth is happening despite a number of hurdles.
Some are concerned the growing population is putting the Capitol Hill community at risk of gentrification and displacement.
In 2017, lawmakers passed legislation that mandated the creation of new districts for Capitol Hill.
The law also made it illegal to build new homes in Capitol Hill neighborhoods, which has frustrated some residents who have expressed concerns about the law’s impact on their neighborhoods.
Sotas biggest issue with the new law is that it doesn’t provide a set amount of time for Capitol Street to open up, or for residents to move into the districts.
And she says that’s putting some residents in an awkward position.
The Capitol Hill district is just the start for Capitol Hills new residents, who will be competing with residents who live farther out and the Districts office supplies chain.
Soto said she understands the desire to have more office supply stores, but she worries that many of the new residents won’t feel the same sense of community they had when they were children.
For those in the district, the only way to get the supplies they need is to move to another district, Soto added.
Sota says she hopes the district will create a better system for moving people into districts.
“We are going to try to make sure we do it right,” she said.
If that doesn’t happen, she believes it will put a strain on the district.
Sotheby’s in Atlanta, which is owned by New York City-based Sotheby, is preparing to open a new office supply and furniture store, called The Capitol Hill Store, in 2018.
Sothebys goal is to help fill the gaps in the supply chain.
The store is located at the intersection of East Capitol Street and East Capitol Avenue in East Atlanta.
Sophia Rizzi, director of marketing at SotheBYD, said the new store will bring “more than a decade of experience to the supply business” and “will enable Sothebund to provide our customers with quality, affordable products for the rest of their lives.”
Rizzi said the store will also provide a new outlet for the Sothe by Bickel brand, which sells a wide range of products and services for office workers.
The brand was created in 2002 and was created to help employees manage their time in the office.
The new store is expected to open in 2019, SotheByBickel announced in a press release.
Sottoes general manager, Matt Parnes, told CNN affiliate WSB-TV that the new location will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will offer the same selection of products as the store in East Capitol.
Parners said the shop will be located in a renovated former building, which was previously used by the Atlanta office supply chain.
“It’s going to be a very positive and welcoming place,” Parns said.
“I think it’s going at a good time,” said Rizzis, of the CapitolHillStore.
“There are a lot of people in the Capitol that really need office supplies.”
Sothebys store, which will be the first of its kind in the Atlanta metro area, will be a “big step forward” for the business, said Parn.
